• Poor middle management
  Management felt apathetic
  Prior manager hired her DAUGHTER in a nursing role
  Impersonal management
  No recognition/praise for work done

• 1,There are two good thing about Alberta health services is the pay and nice team leaders & Coworkers ,
  
  2.the huge con are management they don't ask you what location you wanted and also how they make the schedule isn't fair+ bidding system they have. they give you really short notice that your location is closing not even a week Site Management/Managers never respond to your email. and zero Communications. i wouldn't recommend working for Alberta health services.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• I’ve been employed with AHS for 17 years and as the years go on things instead of getting better, are getting worse to the point I have left AHS completely and refuse to ever work for them again. Too much management, not enough front line workers, no recognition for a job well done. No support from anyone. Staff are miserable. Bullying exists on a daily basis. And it doesn’t seem to matter what dept you work in, its all the same. No moral, no motivation. Just a downright toxic company to work for. I feel sorry for the people who can’t get out. • Non-union staff in a salary freeze for many years, extremely toxic environment despite policies around bullying - no real intent to protect staff from bad managers/directors. Inequity in workload, staffing, budgets;over emphasis on use of cubicles which reduces work efficiency. • No raises for non-union workers, not even allowed to move in the salary grids, union employees get annual bumps so they end up making more than their managers. Do not work here unless you need a pension or you get a union job.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• i make more money and do nothing, plus i run side by side fix and it makes work for others. i sit and review dual monitor requests all day @40hr

• I worked for AHS for eight years, part of which occured during the transition from individual health regions to one massive conglomerate.
  
  I would not recommend working for AHS anymore. There used to be a sense of comradery, but now everything is heavily governmentalized and bureaucratic. The culture is very policially correct now, and there is a constant sense of walking on eggshells so you don't offend anyone. This wore on me after a while. It got to be very stressful, and this is on top of the stress of doing my actual job.
  
  There are other issues which were not limited to my area of work. Few things ever gets properly fixed if they break; departments are not encouraged to interact with each other on anything other than a work level, which leads to the formation of cliques; the rules are not evenly applied to all people which leads to resentment; social interaction, no matter how brief, is frowned upon; understaffing is commonplace; the various unions are constantly undercutting pensions and benefits to the point where the advantages of working for the public sector no longer outweigh the private sector.
  
  For these reasons and others, I left my job. I didn't know this at the time, but there are also very few other options for working in my field in the private sector in Alberta. As in almost none. AHS is my only option if I want to do my job. I now hold a set of skills that I can't use, unless I move out of province.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• I have been with ahs since 2007 on and off. and i can tell you this employer is joke. I cant count how many ceo there been in the last 8 years , it seem each time a new ceo comes in, they are gone when they realize this company is a mess.
  morale is in the toilet, managment is not suportive of employee initiative, we are not given tools to do our job, at least in the department where i work. money is spend at the big hospital but small rural hospital , that a different country and budget. since AHS got formed the culture is like . its my way or the hi way. It is no longer like a family setting. Regardless of what department it is , there is way too many managers . Just like with services , managment is also centralized, one manager may be responsible for staff at 4 or 5 hospitals. You never see your manager only once in a blue moon , and your contact is 95% by email.
  
  in terms of career advancements, this organization is one giant click. I was a casual and i applied 28 to calgary region for various positions and i never got a call. as per union input , they can look you over if your casual. Not fair for those who want more hours. Nurses are constantly burned out from working 2 or 3 part time jobs because full time jobs are hard to get. Each hospital has arm long lists of casuals that are never availble , due to workign other jobs. somewhere else. just like with other comments, your just a number. There is no recognition or joy coming to work.
  years ego i may have been proud to say i work for ahs, not anymore. I dont recomment, or advertise or promote this as a great place to work.
  
  positives: great pay , i cant complain.
  good benefits compared to other places
  
  negatives: way to many to list
  
  i regret coming back to ahs, however i have to ride out this economic storm, otherwise i would have been long gone.

• AHS has got to be one of the better places to work for. For anyone who has worked at SMBs knows that even the smallest places can be a bit bogged down in process or mismanagement at certain levels. So the same applies here. But this place has changed, yes not everyone will say it has. If you have been doing the same job with the more or less the same people and managers for the last 6 years chances are you are too entrenched to see it. And there are a lot of people that have been here over 10 or 15 or more years. Chances are these people have a lot to gripe and complain about, but never leave AHS so take their tales with a grain of salt. As for anyone who has left and come back will see the differences.
  
  There are multiple sides to this organization, business, the unions jobs, non-clinical, the doctors. The amount of divisions and units is massive so it depends on where you are. I personally got a lot of positive feedback about the organization from a few different employees in different areas over the years and happily signed up to work for them. I can honestly say it is a great place for me, lots to learn with actual time to do so, pay is average to good, benefits are great and ymmv but the middle to upper management are capable of understanding and will listen at this point. Some groups are being "forced" into the union with some exclusions, from my understanding this not because AHS is doing so but it based on external entities.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• Yikes. Everyone in IT is very upset at being unionized. This is not so much AHS' fault as it is Health Care in general in Alberta. I would, however, echo the sentiments about being bullied by management. In fact, by and large management should be replaced across the board. Many of them were merely 'bumped up', or just pushed their way there. The corporate culture is bad, and everyone says 'things were much better before AHS'. It's too bad, really, they had a chance to create something good, but instead created a heap of folks willing to walk over anyone to rise to the top.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• People working for AHS are constantly bullied by management. They are now forcing employees to swallow lower benefits through forced union; the employment contract you signed few years ago is ignored..thats how we lose smart hard working people in health care to private sector, you wonder why things are so slow....another is AHS media makes it sound all good, but its far from reality. • A LOT of bullying goes on within AHS and there is nothing you can do. HR does not want to address it, and the union has a hard time dealing with this as well as it is a matter of personal opinion. But when you lose 5 staff members in less than a year directly because of an office manager, it is a sign. Unfortunately, they don't care. Go to where the grass is greener. • I have had various positions with AHS and always hoped a different dept. would be better but to no avail. The management is awful, some places like finance they micromanage you to the point of interrogating you on bathroom breaks. Not a happy environment and poorly structured departments. Public money badly wasted and cutbacks everywhere. Really nasty people in the offices everyone is stressed and bullying is rampant. • I worked as an RN for AHS in the past and had left my position to stay home with my young children. I am looking to return to work and have been applying for various positions with AHS for the past 6 months. I have not been invited to even 1 interview. It seems that all the posted positions are only being offered to internal candidates. I am a well experienced RN with nearly 20 years of experience behind me! I also noticed that AHS recently posted an ad in a Calgary newspaper stating that more nurses with AHS need to work full-time. How do they expect to fill any fulltime positions when they won't let any external RN applicants in the door! I'm seriously thinking of just changing careers. • This organization is way too large. There are too many "Managers" when there should be more front line staff. Expecations are always changing; staff don't feel valued or heard. • Have worked EMS in Alberta for 12 years. Since AHS took over ambulance delivery in 2009, it seems like everything has gone in reverse. Up until 4 years ago felt valued and appreciated, had great working environment and enjoyed being a Paramedic. Now I feel as though I am no more than a number, supervisors and management care more about seemingly useless policies and procedures than patient care, ambulances being booked 'out of service' due to poor planning, its difficult to get time off, and I have a union that doesn't seem to care.   read complete rating Hide complete rating
