Have worked EMS in Alberta for 12 years. Since AHS took over ambulance delivery in 2009, it seems like everything has gone in reverse. Up until 4 years ago felt valued and appreciated, had great working environment and enjoyed being a Paramedic. Now I feel as though I am no more than a number, supervisors and management care more about seemingly useless policies and procedures than patient care, ambulances being booked 'out of service' due to poor planning, its difficult to get time off, and I have a union that doesn't seem to care.
