  • Essentially another huge faceless corporation with little to differentiate it from others like Wal-Mart or Costco, except it's predominantly books here to lend it an air of intellect.
It's a good place to coast, even a casual observer will notice that the minimum wage customer service staff do little to nothing and seem apathetic and detached from their work.
If you are the type who likes to go the extra distance and put a lot of effort into your work, just be advised that it won't get you much here. Even though management prides itself on its open line of communication, there is little to none and even less opportunity for advancement or promotion. Just another workplace where personal bias and kissing feet is recognized over pride in work and accomplishment. If you do make that extra effort they'll always hold you to that standard and drive you like a slave while others stand around and chat about their love lives over coffee.
Once you agree to do things like overnight shifts to help them out they'll always expect it and hold it against you if you don't so don't bother. They'll also cut your weekly hours to compensate for the night ones-so you won't be getting ahead at all. Just do your assigned work hours, take your pay and go home-take my advice.
Also, be advised that due to slowdown in business during the summer months, hours are cut to as little as eight hours per week. This results in a huge amount of gossip and backstabbing amongst the nosier of even the senior staff over who gets the most hours-very uncomfortable, annoying and immature.
It's a good place to make a little money while looking for something better, but really not much here to validate staying. A lazy pace for most with the expected poor pay and wage augmentations.

Go to the Best Buy Canada Ltd ratemyemployer ratings and look up rater 23. There is a very wise comment about CYA covering your ass in work situations.

So right you are, family, co-workers and friends have all told me the same thing.

I've worked for other large retailers and other industry companies. Generally, the most dedicated and hard working ones get screwed over the most because they give away freebies the most. Have some tactical common sense, don't always endlessly give away yourself for free or everyone will start to expect it from you always. Be machiavellian and only give out if it does anything to further your agenda or to promote a certain public image impression of yourself.
