City of Edmonton

Size of company: Large (More than 500 employees)

Industry: Government and Public Administration

  • I FINALLY got on with the City of Edmonton after nearly begging on my hands knees for the job. It is considered a temporary/part-time position so you dont get benefits, even if you work 40+ hours a week for the rest of your life. I've been working here for about 2 months, with many positive reviews from my clientele and classes I teach and I have been asking for more hours because right now Im only getting about 13h/week. I gave my availability for the next couple of months saying I could work 25-30h/week. Instead I got 1 more 4 hour shift and my boss (who is severely underqualified for the position)who decided to hire a bunch of new employees and give them the hours I specifically asked for on my availability! Things like this seem to constantly happen with this boss I have and it is very frustrating. Not once have I actually been able to see her in person, because she doesnt seem to go out of her office and actually see the centers she is in charge of. Once I find a new suitable job I will quit with the city. Ive worked many different jobs with the city and they have all been the same way. The person in charge is generally underqualified and they've just been promoted into the position because they have spent their whole life there, not because they know what they are doing
