• The pay is good but there are a lot of sacrifices to make, & I would tell anyone to run as far away from this employer as you can. There is zero work life balance, forget about spending time with your friends & family. The place is also extremely mismanaged from the top down. Management does not care about labour laws, labour contracts, or least of all your safety despite preaching safety in public communications. • Things ran smoothly and everything was fine tuned. Work load was expertly administered. Training was more than adequate and easily available. • 30 years in the service as a conductor. This job was absolutely awesome when I first started. Great for the employee, but not so good for the company. Enter Tellier, and the share holders. Good for them, and the company, bad for the employees. The only advice I can give anyone that is thinking about a running trades career is this. First and foremost, learn the rules, learn the rules, learn the rules. The only ammunition you have against the meat heads (train masters, assistant sups, sups, and all managers) is knowledge. Study your union agreement, and when you are absolutely sure of yourself and your rights, grow a set of balls, and use them only when needed. Do your job, don't complain, and pick up your paycheck. It's not easy to do at the start, but as the learning process develops, it will happen. CN has afforded me an exceptional life, with only a few more career years to go. Watch your backs, and don't be afraid to stand up for your rights. But first, be sure of your rights.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• I started over a year ago at CN. Take what you hear on other ratings with a grain of salt. I myself have had a positive experience thus far, and still continue to work with the company. I am not employed by H.R. for the record. Of the group I was hired with, we have only lost 2 people due to retention. One went home back to his home country for family reasons. Of my time here I have seen two people released both of which were for not following mandatory safety rules. I will agree that this can be a dangerous place to work for, but management does care in regards to safety. They take steps to control or isolate threats as they occur, but with millions of tones of freight moving in tight quarters there is a large chance of injury or death if anyone were to be complacent in their following the rules. CN employees also share their work space with multiple departments’ constantly moving freight and equipment. This is an unforgiving workplace when it comes to injuries but if safety is in the forefront of both management and the employee's minds injuries and deaths can be avoided.
  Cn's pension plan is matched by next to none. I was previously working in automation and I wasn't making half the amount that I am making with CN. The railway is the backbone to our economy and is a 24/7 365 operation, therefore employees with be expected to work odd shifts and through holidays (they make this crystal clear during the interviews and testing). CN previously went through a hiring freeze went they went from a crown corporation to being privatized. This means a huge opportunity for advancement for those who wish to pursue a career on the management side of the operation. In short I would recommend this company to anyone who is willing to work hard, is able to follow safety procedures to protect themselves and those around them, and people who have pride in looking back at the end of the day and seeing what they accomplished.

• I am in the final stages of being hired with CN so I thought I would check out some reviews. I was shocked by reading these fake negative posts as I always thought CN was a "dream" job. Great pay, benefits, and pension. My only concern was the balance between work and family as I have two young children. As I see working from the truthful positive posts though, CN is definitely the best if you value your family and personal life. After reading all these posts I will certainly be taking this position as I do value family and being treated with respect. I have two degrees and a great position right now that will do anything it can to ensure your family life is taken care of first. • CN has great benefits, higher pay than most for the industry. It is an ever changing workforce with a lot of retirements and new hires but that makes way for advancement opportunities. I see a lot of people complaining on here, but you have to ask why do they still work here? The pay/benefits/opportunities out weigh the negatives, you are compensated for long hours, stress is high at times but overall I would definately recommend to family and friends.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• CN is a company that always innovate and put all the energy required for the success of its customers...and this is an important criteria of satisfaction when you expect to do a long career with such an employer. • well,bunch of 50 people who hired on in high school, never worked a hard job in their life and all they do is cry about the work. Place would be much better if 25% of the work force retired tomorrow and wouldn't have to deal with all the cry babies. I can't believe there are people with a grade 10 education who make 120 thousand dollars a year who cry that they don't make enough or that they have to wake up at 2 am to make that kind of cash.
  
  customer service department in Montreal really suck with bunch of old ppl who complain all time about work and put pressure on new hires even the new hires getting less money when they r hired they have to wait 21 months
  the management bunch of young losers have nothing to do only to blame you about ur mistakes
  alot of lake internal communication

• I am a management employee who was formerly a conductor. In total I have just under 2 years time with the company. The pay is adequate, although the lifestyle can be summed up as less than par. There are great opportunities for advancement in management. Being a conductor has its own benefits, getting guaranteed hours of rest, opportunity to bid scheduled jobs. All in all, the company is good to work for, if you can tolerate the lifestyle. I would rate this job with 3 stars.

• CN is a great place to work and has been for my 40 years. Sometimes you don't like what the boss says or does, but he's the boss not you. quit whining and just do your job. We don't need to debate every task. If you don't like your paycheque, 7-11 is hiring. Don't like shifts, working weekends, quit, we are sick of you whiners. • Left a good job to get in with cn on as a conductor. I thought it was going to be a great move for me and my family but 8 months in it really sucks. The pay is not that great for Alberta actualy made a lot more money in oil patch. Anyway wish I had stayed in my other job as soon as I find something else I'm leaving because it's just a crappy life as a conductor for the pay I'll do something else because the pay and life style = shity job   read complete rating Hide complete rating
