I have worked in Material Management for several years now. It is a unionized job which has some benefits like good pay, paid sick time, etc. The down side of the union job is essentially and truthfully every single negative stereotype of union work. Only the useless and incompetent remain employed, since anyone with desire to complete their work well are pressured hard by the lazy to slow down since they're making them look bad. Any sick time of 3 days or more requires a note from your doctor, and calling in sick for just 1 day of pay is a "waste", so everyone always calls in sick 2 days in a row, frequently on Thurs and Fri or before a long weekend. People cannot perform their simple daily tasks despite plenty of time to complete it. Workers are expected to work unsupervised, but most take advantage of this to screw around for hours on end. If this is discovered, they are not fired, nor disciplined in any way, shape, or form. It is literally possible to not do your job at all, and not get fired for it. The atmosphere is mentally corrosive, and has a constant "union vs management" mentality (you are either with the union and ALL of it's workers, or you are with the evil management, NO grey area). Similarly, legitimate complaints against a fellow union member immediately places you in the management side of the equation. The place will corrupt any honest soul, and is exceptionally inviting to useless, conniving, lying, and deceptive schemers.(...).
