• Sanjel does not treat anyone well, internally and externally in the company. They do not operate to be mutually beneficial for employees, nor the companies they work with. • I have worked with SANJEL CEMENTERS since 1993. They were a really great company to work for, Don always remembered your name, even with 800 employees.
  It`s to be expected that with company growth and a rising ``head count``; an employee`s or employer`s devotion and loyalty will suffer to a certain degree amongst both parties.
  I was a part of the management team for the final 8 years of my employment.
  After 13 years of my initial service went by, the only ``team`` that was to be spoken of was the people who worked out of your base or those in neighboring bases.
  The ``Deciders`` in Calgary kept their heads in the clouds and avoided any concerns or considerations of their field level managers who, for the most part had been with the company from the beginning and who in part, had made Sanjel the success that it had become to date.
  Then they thought that they would ride their heels and hire Schlumberger hands to infest their executive boardroom beyond a 50% deciding margin.
  It`s been a shit show ever since.
  Most recently in the cement division alone they have targeted and disposed of at least 17 devote area and field managers who have served between 15 to 30 yrs of service.
  Many of these people started before i did in 1993!!!
  Loyalty.... Go work there for yourself, invest half your life, then decide. I did.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• I worked for this company for 14 years, In the beginning the company and management was family orientated and cared for their employee's. New management began to take over as the owner of the company began to take a back seat. The new management, in recent years is the worst that I have seen in a large corporation. The company lost the vision of the owner, and the ability to communicate with the employee's. Management turned to finger pointing and lost its ability to listen and decided to rule with an iron fist. The field personal are treated as second class and are tasked with unreachable goals. Along with mass expenditures of unneeded properties and an over abundance of head office staff, the company lost it way. After 14 yrs and knowing most people in the company, there was not so much as a good by from management nor any contact of any sort from head office. The company will need a complete change of management and get back to basics when the patch decides to come back as the current regime has done nothing to keep its valued employee's. • I have worked for this company for 20 years and I cannot believe the downward spiral as of late. The ethics demonstrated during the recent massive layoffs is astounding and I would not recommend working here to anyone. If you are looking for a company that will treat you fairly and consistently, stay away!For the company to survive, they need to reconsider the new management team that they recruited and get back to it's roots.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• i worked for Sanjel for 3 years but when i stood up for the other drivers and my self over camp 98 in BC it was a health issue and a safety issue they found a way to fire me, saying i filled out my pre-trip paper work wrong, and yet i did it the same way for 3 years,So in doing so they refused to pay me my severance pay, so beware when your in this situation dont speak up just call the labor standards act as im in a battle with them now.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• This company is growing so fast. It's not able to keep up with the growth and balance it's needs vs treating it's most valued asset employees fairly. It's all about spending on equipment and gaining market share. I personally am under compensated for my job. after many years of watching senior experienced hands leave I wonder if Sanjel cares at all about the people who got the company to where it is.

• The company may be getting a bit ahead of itself in terms of spending. Too many marginal business opportunities being pursued in hopes of increasing market share. This could be a recipe for disaster if its not managed properly and I question if its being managed properly at a variety of levels within the company.

• A job is like anything else...you get out of it what you put into it. Simple.
  
  To all those that come on this site and others like it to rant and complain behind the anonimoty of a computer, whether it is about Sanjel, Calfrac, Trican, Haliburton, Baker, Schlumberger or whoever else you work for or have worked for....Do us all a favor, man up and quit if its that bad. Have some integrity and change employment.
  Alberta is stocked full of jobs, so quit what you're doing if its so bad and leave these jobs to people that are able and willing to work.

• Some positives of working at Sanjel are:
  -I've worked with some great people who were willing to teach me from knowing very little about the industry
  -good time off in the form of vacation, corporate days, Stampede days, flex day. I've also never had a problem with sick days (within reason)
  -there are good opportunities to move up and around if you have the drive and ambition.
  
  The negatives:
  -decisions do not get made quickly. Prepare to ask repeatedly for something you need done.
  -many people seem to get retained/promoted when they are incompetent, lazy, unqualified.
  -the company still acts like it's a tiny company and forgets it has grown many fold since its start. This results in communication errors, overlaps in duties, lapses in duties, people with ambiguous jobs, people with more work than they could ever handle, simply because there is such terrible organization. There are near constant "reorganizations" that manage to make everything less clear.
  -there is too much focus on recruiting and none on retention. This industry lends itself to job/company hopping but they could limit that by asking themselves how they can make long term employees happier and more fulfilled in their jobs.
  
  Overall, it's a good place to work if you put in the effort and take your career into your own hands instead of waiting for upward movement to just happen. The oilfield isn't for the lazy or complacent. There is money and real careers to be made for those who want it. • I have been with sanjel for two years. I dont have any real major issues with the company, other than its going through some changes which aren't all bad. If you can't handle working in the patch than don't do it, so many people on here are bad mouthing all these companies for some pretty lame reasons. • I have been with Sanjel for over 13 years, and this is the worst I've seen it run in that time. The leadership in Calgary is the weakest ever. They hire an engineer, who has schooling to be an engineer, and within a few months he's running a department in the company. Has no practical experience, no wrok experience, hardly any life experience and certainly hasn't gained any respect from anyone in the field, because he hasn't been there. They have no leadership skills of any kind and he's put in charge of running a multi million dollar company. Comments have come out of Calgary like we have to get the right man in the postion. I think they need to look no further than in there mirrors to see that they have failed miserabley in that statement. They have hired ex employees of another company to come in and take over and make all the costly changes, that are not needed. The company ran successfully for many years without there help. We went through the same thing in 2008 with the ex Tucker man, who was eventually let go for his stupidity and then they go and do it again. Like they say history has a way of repeating itself, it just that the people in place in Calgary just haven't learnt from it. Idiots surround themselves with idiots, and that is exactly what the leadership of this company is doing. I work at a camp in the south where we haven't had a manager or an area manager in over 10 years. • WOW !!!
  I am totaaly shocked and disheartened by the lack of respect for the compnay that I have been at sicne 1991.
  Yes, some of these negative comments may be true but there is ALOT of good things GREAT working for Sanjel.
  This is a company that is NOT for everyone and you will get out from Sanjel what you decide to put in.
  We are a service company and due to the nature of the Oil Field Business, we work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and NEVER CLOSE. For all of you who feel betrade and feel you work too many hours for the pay....This job is not for you. Back when I started, there was no hotels available, no sleepers on the trucks, no airbags on some units,no air conditioning except for a some fan in the corner of the windshield, no fuel cards or visas within the company and it was first in first out regardless of hours.....That was just the way it was...
  Sanjel has come along way from then. your bonus was from $50-$90 and that was it. Bonus and a half was collected after 15 jobs in a month. There was no training. Training was done in the field and depended on your motivation to learn and move up.
  I will agree that it is hard work both on the employee and a marriage. It takes stron will and committment. Sanjel os a great place to call a career IF YOU WANT IT!!! If you do not want a career and just want money, then this is not for you.
  If you actually sit down and talk to LONG TIME Sanjel employees like myself and others, you will understand and learn that with dedication, committment, a stong head and will to succeed, you and your family can and will have a very good life. Trust me when i say that if you satrt at Sanjel when you are 20-23 years old and give it your all, you can retire at 40-45 yrs old with a home paid for, ATVs, a lake lot and money in the bank. You can travel and use company discounts.
  It is a HARD job and long hours for sure, but SANJEL IS NOT for a person who wants to work 8-10 hours/day and have weekends off. I quit once for a few years but came back and alomst at 19 years total with Sanjel. I am not a manager and still love what i do. I dont have to punch a clock, I work with a great bunch of guys, I work 9 months a year and then i get 20-25 days holidays paid for so that make it 8 months a years of total work... We have 3 months total craziness of work and then we relax for break up and then gear up for winter again... For those of you who do not agree with me, then you should just move on to a different chapter in your life. Sanjel is not for you and thats fine... Just dont put down the company that has grown very fast over 30 years and of course goes through growing pains every year.... I have seen every lay off and seen alot of people come and go. I will see alot more people come to Sanjel and alot more leave. Sanjel is a great career and you will get out what you put into it. Be strong and dedicated... I do have to say that YES, i wish Don Mac would have kept the reins but he built his empire and is very well deserved a great retirement. After all he built Sanjel from scratch and dedicated his life to the company. Good on him. He gave my family a great life and my son is able to do things alot of kids in his school were not able to do. Dont give up on the hand that feeds you and be proud of the company you work for , no matter where it is... if you don't like it there, move on and find somewhere else. Good luck in your choice. • Either your "going forward" meaning someone f$&@d up and we can't loose anyone and dear god if we pointed a finger at who it was or we are striving for "pride by performance" I like the company and the people don't like hearing "not sure" to every question. asked but next day it's a not sure followed by in a week of not sure or a will try. Corporate level structuring is getting so big but we loosing guys at an actual income making level due to lack of raises and or benifits directly to the field level workers. • The only thing they ask you is whats your hobbies.
  I have never posted my comments on line before, but i promsied my self that i would come back to this site cause all the comments where sad ones but now I see why,
  I have not seen my wife and new babe in over a month I am away from home making shit money in camp and back at home terminal. I thought I should be able to make a avg of a $1 k a week take home I am a little short of that so far.
  all I can say is this company is a shame, I enjoy doing the work, it has so much that it could be but they have allot of dead weight dragging the company down. than on top of this they want you to fix, maintain, clean ETC on your truck and if you are some one who does things right away its great but its expected for you to go work on the truck where where the last 3 drivers did not want to work or fix nothing. They have some really great supervisors still left but I can see them getting pissed off and leaving cause the yo yo's they are hireing cant do ****.
  
  They are giveing guys drivers license that should not have them and guys that do have them they treat them like your a baby cant travel bye your self mean while every one leaves you behind any way after you waited a hour and a half for the super to do his paper work.
  
  they are hiring from Ont cause we want to work, But they LIE to you, and the T***** Group will say what ever to get you to commit so they can make some money, for you to show up there,

• Worked all most 10 years before I realized what a mistake I had made. I wish someone would of slapped me across my face my first week. I am now making 5 times the money for half of the work. Do not be content with this job as there are so many other better employers on all levels. This company does not give back, and is only concerned about the bottom line. Take a look at all the managers from the past who have moved on and why??????? This will awnser your question about what kind of employer they are. Save your self the time and move on.
