• The job itself is fun and the customers and fellow part timers are nice. Unfortunately, management is not the same. I'm sure the BC Save On Foods stores are better to work at. But in SK the stores are neglected big time by regional management and safety/health inspectors. I'm sure inspectors get paid off or something because with 2 years of working with the company I have seen so much mold and years old products and grease behind all departments. Anything that breaks takes months to be replaced or fix. On a normal work week the store is rather unkept and shelves are half empty. Unless the store gets word the big bosses are coming then everything is how it should be for the days that they are expected. New hires are never trained enough or properly - so unsanitary behaviours stay the same in departments, to no fault but to the management. I have seen many people be swiftly hired and then fired because they "couldnt keep up" or "didnt meet quality" but in reality were never trained for the tasks required. Most the time new hires only get a few hours of training. Definitely not a place you want to work at for a first time. Workflow is a complete mess of product that we need that never gets ordered, or if it is then its common to get shorted. Requesting time off is rather easy but it often creates scheduling conflicts with other team members and a much higher workload for everyone else. Room for promotion or growth in the company is a joke. Any positions higher than part time are quickly and exclusively given out to external hires. On many occasions I have had to teach managers how to do tasks they should already know, very annoying. Overall, only apply if it's a last resort.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• Never have I worked at a store that is so neglected, in disrepair, and filthy. They have it all, unsanitary “gender-neutral” bathrooms that look like they are used as safe injection rooms and falsely listed as “out of order”. Coolers that have a mildew like odor or worst, signs of grey and/or black mold and don’t work properly. Nothing looks like it has ever been cleaned as you’ll see shelves with damaged, outdated, unlabelled and spilt product (sometimes even the product is stuck on the shelf or unsafely stacked too high), rust etc. There has been evidence the store has rats when you’re working product from the back. If you report something is broken etc it’s just shrugged off and your told to put it in a “suggestion box”. I don't know how Food Safe hasn't shut them down yet?
  
  Management is bloated, inefficient and incompetent, they don’t even know what’s going on in their own store and are unrealistic, and the “Workday” program is atrocious along with the CAO automated ordering system. The store employs nearly 100 people and they are always hiring not because of turn-over but to drive wages and hours down, sadly they hire the “lowest common denominator” give no training, will just throw you in the deep in of the pool and keep on piling on more responsibilities and duties on you till you break and quit or set you up to fail. You're disposable, and that is an understatement.
  
  Majority of the staff you’ll work with have adopted a quiet quitting attitude, although you’ll spend the majority of your time working alone as there’s never enough staff working, usually under 15 people everyday and all you really do is just stock shelves or runaround completing online/ecomm orders. The hours are wildly inconsistent between 4 and 40/week (you’ll only get a 4 or 8 hour shift, nothing in-between) the pay is minimum wage regardless of prior experience. They claim they are a union but it feels more like a fake/company union and there is no chance for growth or career advancement if that is what you want, management will just make promises and never follow-thru.
  
  As for customer experience, it isn’t positive. Because of the store's location they cater almost exclusively to the homeless, drug-addicts, low-income and transients (the store always has an smell of weed, body odor or boozes) as a result they have “secret shoppers” and security patrolling the store assuming everyone is a thief making for an unwelcoming environment. The aisle floor plan is poorly laid out with no rhyme or reason (you'll have a lot of WTF moments when putting stock away or helping customers and there is an actual “Aisle Zero”) and they are unusually cramped for a store of it’s size and littered with mini displays congesting the aisles further. Self-checkouts regularly have hissy-fits, there’s signage in multiple locations like (ie floral dept) telling customers to ask an associate for assistance, as a result the PA is regularly making customer service calls although you'll have a hard time hearing it as management turned the PA volume down.
  
  Overall the customer experience and customer service is just as deplorable.
  
  In closing, Save-On-Foods, Port Alberni, BC (part of the Pattinson Food Group), whether you are a customer or looking for work, look elsewhere and don’t look back!   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• They often call us on day off . They would call two times after we tell them we have plan and not available . They cut hours few months ago , and no one is happy about it . • Managers seem to have no clue what is going on within their store and if they do it is not properly relayed to the staff. The expectations of what needs to be done in a day are entirely unrealistic without overtime or extra staff in side departments. Health and safety takes a backseat to profit and meeting the bottom line. As an assistant department manager I am regularly performing duties above my pay grade and am expected to fill in for all management that is away without any form of compensation. Most promotions mean getting paid at your regular rate for overtime, and they WILL make you work overtime. I am called by management on over 50% of my days off and there is very little effort put into scheduling. It’s not uncommon to work until 10:15pm then have to be back for opening at 8am, not to mention I haven’t received two days off in a row for over a month. I’m sure some managers are better than others but the company should not allow the level of incompetence and disrespect for team members’ personal time that I’ve seen at my store. The one thing I can say is that having extended medical and dental is a huge plus. All in all Save On Foods (#972) is not a good place to work.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• SoF is only interested in one thing, profit, and they are terrible at getting that profit. From cutting hours because we "aren't making enough" or "aren't going fast enough" despite being overwhelmed, having very little space to work with, especially with Ecomm, and being overstressed, to not hiring enough people or giving those people hours.
  
  This company is dreadful and no one should be applying to work here, especially for minimum wage. They keep trying to tell us there's a labor shortage in regards to hiring, but there isn't. It's that between minimum wage and every single employee being deeply unhappy that no one wants to work here in particular, and I don't blame them. All the SoF stores are supposed to be apart of a union, but the ones in Alberta are apart of a fake union that doesn't care about us the employees, naturally, but for the company and its profits. Meaning that the "union" screws us over time and again, which is unsurprising but still terrible.
  
  This site says no employer deserves a 1 star rating, but there some that do, and SoF is one of them.
  
  Do yourself a favour and avoid SoF and its parent company, Overwaitea. You won't regret doing so.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• I worked at a store in Winnipeg, and I can tell you that SoF is interested in 1 thing.
  
  Profit.
  
  From my experience they do not care about their employees, because there is always someone to hire to replace you; therefore they don't like to deal with any employee who is "diffrent" or are requiring special accommodations, or extra effort.
  
  I told them when I started, that I have wrist and hand issues that make me work slower. I was told that should not be an issue. Then my manager would tell me one thing, and the rest of management another thing. My physical and mental health was in jeopardy, and I got thrown "under the bus" in an almost literal way.
  
  I was getting bullied by Management, gaslit by Management, and told by multiple Supervisors that "Maybe you should get a job where you're not so stressed out".
  
  Really? That simple, eh?
  
  I wouldn't have been so stressed if I had actually been supported by my supervisors and had upper management actually cared, the situation would have changed. Instead, I was strung out for 3 months - resulting in Panic attacks and anxiety when faced with dealing with my verbally abusive manager.
  
  I had to quit. For my mental and physical wellbeing.
  
  
  If you're looking for a place to work - do not go to save on foods. They will work you to the bone, and then toss you aside for fresh meat.

• The most important thing within this company is profit - the schedule is random and one can work night shift followed by a morning shift. With the union dues, the wage is less than minimum wage and there is lots of stress from entitled customers and management doesn't seem to care about the well being of employees - they sit in the offices upstairs and rarely are on the floor (the only supervisor on the floor is the newest one) The washrooms are not always clean and sometimes there is no soap and toilet paper. There is no work life balance due to the random scheduling. This employer struggles to keep employees because of the low wages and not treated with respect by management or customers due to the low wage. There is no pride in having your labour be worth nothing and having expected to work very hard for the miniscule wage - it is called slave on for a reason - the low wages.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• I worked at Save on Foods for 6 months. I actually really liked some of the employees. The managers however... most were okay but some were just unwilling to help with other jobs. I worked in a specific department that was kind of separate from the rest of the store. Any time I would ask for help, some of the managers would brush it off, give me attitude or pass it on to another person. They would then COMPLAIN about me panicking and having a meltdown due to lack of help. I'm a teenager not some machine that can keep working under constant stress. What took me to the breaking point was the manager blaming me for a super hectic and messy day. I was having a meltdown due to overwhelming stress and he kept telling me to calm down. He also kept blaming me and cutting me off while I was trying to talk. Overall, one manager ruined my experience and totally caused the store to be screwed over for the rest of the night. • I would not send anyone here i was mislead from square one. I was given 16 hrs and then terminated on telephone for not being available 24/7 they seem to think people have no rights. Manager so proud...bagger 40 years ago. Ah...he forgot. Position has gone to his head. Lastly min wage and union deductions for some kind of pension (to the tune of just shy of 60.00) money I'll never see again. Dont go there you will be sad unless you like being OWNED with no rights

• Applied to the local save on foods as my first job while i was in 10th grade at first it was as expected but the cracks in their system soon started to show. However it was not all bad most of the employees and supervisors/department managers were incredibly friendly and welcoming to new employees however the management is absolutely awful. in this particular store the assistant manager not only bullied quite a few employees myself not included but also lied and used underhanded "tactics" on said employees. there was a strong disconnect between the management and regular clerks and even the supervisors. a few instances of such are one supervisor who i knew rather well on more than a few occasions was given a list thirty plus items long and was told to do it in four hours. he had to stay six hour overtime with no extra pay and was given no help and then the next day he was ripped to shred because he wanted to go home before three a.m so he could start his shift at seven a.m the next day. another grocery clerk even being able to say that he had filed for his hours to be changed one year and even when i left he was still trying to have them change it and that was a year and one half after the initial incident. i would say if you are willing to do relatively easy work that requires no though and agree with every small thing that management says i encourage you to give this employer a try but beware that if you have any sort of dynamic schedule and the management doesn't feel like giving you that day off even when given a two to three week advanced notice. a few other rapid fire problems are that many people i worked with felt in necessary to quit within a few months of starting. many instances of a single clerk running half the store on a busy day took place and the most prominent was that at least a dozen clerks quit by walking out and never returning and another dozen or so left by handing in a resignation form.so in short if you are attending or planning to attend an educational institute and are strapped for time i would highly recommend against seeking employment within this company. But if you have a free schedule and are willing to put up with incompetent, lazy, and ego inflated management i suggest you attempt to work at Save-On-Foods.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• This employer is not worth your time or effort, the management is useless, the senior staff are old, pathetic and bitchy. Training and encouragement do not exist. The pay and hours are pathetic. The overall experience you will have working here will leave a bad taste in your mouth. • Pro: The lay out of the store is eye catching lots of wonderful things (but prices are no different).
  Con: the management team is HORRIBLE! Respect is non existant...Support...non existant....hours....next to nothing even if you have full time availabilty.

• I have been working at save on for 1 year now. Some people here are fuckin bunch of bullies and they talk however they want to talk to you. Some managers have a misunderstanding that they are the dictators and they can do whatever they want to. They will say whatever they want to whenever straight on your face, they don't care about they employees at all. In short they treat their staff like shit. Some people here including one manager have been rude to me, harrasing me and bullying me and I can't do anything about it. They are not ready to listen. • I worked for this company for five years and left due to extreme harassment and bullying from my new manager. I no longer felt comfortable even being in the same room as my manager. There is a terrible culture of sexual harassment (managers will pass it off as "jokes" to make it seem okay) and exploitation of new employees who do not understand their rights. They WILL take advantage of you unless you show you have the ability to stand up for yourself and the knowledge of your union rights. Most employees at my store couldn't stand the senior management, and hated the job. • There is a lot of bullying in this company of less senior employees by more senior employees. It is largely ignored and not discouraged by either management or the union.

• I was hired by Cooper's Foods in Glenmore, Kelowna. I don't even know where to begin but do not work here!!!
  I was hired with the promise of having at least 32 hours and not working Mondays and Tuesdays, I put this on my application form and verbally made sure in the interview and was told that was not problem. This was very important to me to get this across to them as I was leaving another job to work there.
  
  I worked there about 2 months before I had to leave. I was only getting about 20 hours and was almost always scheduled to work Mondays and Tuesdays. This was extremely frustrating as I was told I would be getting good hours and that it would be fine with my chosen days off.
  
  The management is a joke, in fact everything about this place is a joke. I don't like to name names but I feel its deserved as the store manager Brad Laird is an ignorant pig, who will try to intimidate employees. Its disgusting!
  I'm now working in Starbucks which is awesome!

• I am a new employee at slave on foods, I thought I was hired as a cashier,but I have spent more time in the worst smelling area in the store,the deli. The worst thing about this store is the back stabbing being done by people who have worked there a long time. We work hard assuming that that is how we are supposed to work and get told that isn't how they want it done and when you ask for help it's like you just said a 4 letter word. No one told me I was going to be kicked around for the worst amount of money I have ever been paid.
