  • I've worked at UVic for six years. There's little chance for promotion or recognition. The pay is very low compared to other Canadian universities; there's this feeling that you should consider yourself lucky to work for such a venerable institution. The positives: I get a lot of holidays (5 weeks) and have an excellent benefits package. The thought of only progressing my career through time (not effort or excellence), though, is very discouraging.

I did temp term work for uvic. The time waiting is very long and your could die before the opportunity arrives. An electrician acquintance of mine did years of casual on call work for uvic and only got promoted to permanent when his colleague died the previous weekend from a heart attack while mowing his lawn or something like that. The guy was alive on a Friday and dead by Monday, not too healthy either.
