• You will do well here if you are agreeable and conform to the status quo. Diversity is good if you are their type of diverse. UVic's main concern seems to be their rankings in Maclean's etc. not their employee relations. • I worked at the University in a very poorly organized position working between Health Services and Counselling Services. I worked under a psychologist who is a ruthless bully and took pleasure in undermining me in meetings and was incredibly unprofessional in humiliating me in front of other managers at a performance evaluation. This environment took the life out of me; i felt like a shell of a person at the end of it. Thankfully i was able to move on to a much better career position without much trouble; however, the bullying culture that is allowed to continue at the university can ruin a person's self esteem and mental health. I truly despise the pychologists who i worked under; they know how to manipulate people. Evil and nasty people and i am glad i no longer have to set foot on the campus which is riddled with negative energy. (even though i am an alumni and should really love the university - I loath it and i will recommend that people steer clear of Uvic

• At the Island Medical Program at UVic there is ruthlessness from management directed towards staff. If they dislike you for any reason (make a mistake, question a task, socialize with coworkers) you will be deemed an enemy and they will do anything in their power to make your life a misery in order to get you to leave. They know the limits of the Unions and will work around the policies to obtain the outcome that they desire.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• Awful place to work for. They demean and intimidate employees and then use words like "poor demeanor" and "standoffish" in reviews. Communication is terrible, they just don't know what they're doing. Workers aren't properly punished for breaking work safe practices, in fact most of them are high when they make the errors they do. A toxic work environment I would liken to a high school. People need to grow up and do their job properly.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• The university does not recognize, reward or promote employees based on contribution. If you are a high performer who is looking for an environment where this will be recognized and rewarded this is not the place for you. • I temped at UVic in a few different departments. Some of the people are nice, but it is a typical union environment. Short days, lots of holidays, very little work, and very high dissatisfaction from staff. The pay is decent for Victoria, but standard in terms of other universities or gov't work. And of course, they were responsible for major fraud, compromising thousands of employees' & past employees' personal banking and credit information when they were broken into (no security on a ground-floor office). • It is very hard to advance at UVic. The institution values its senior administration first, then faculty, students and staff. It forgets that students are the reason the institution exists and that staff are the front line. There is no free education for staff and no progression. • I've worked at UVic for six years. There's little chance for promotion or recognition. The pay is very low compared to other Canadian universities; there's this feeling that you should consider yourself lucky to work for such a venerable institution. The positives: I get a lot of holidays (5 weeks) and have an excellent benefits package. The thought of only progressing my career through time (not effort or excellence), though, is very discouraging.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• I worked here for 10 years and had to leave. This is the type of place where the hard workers get nowhere and the employees that abuse benefits and aren't hard workers are the ones to get promotions. Management doesn't care. • I was employed as term temporary staff in the Communications, Food Services, Student Recruitment departments over a sporadic 15 years. It's highly unionized and you can forget about getting permanent full time anytime soon. Even if a lot of staff happen to die, you'd still not get in because the employer and union bureaucracy will crush you. It's a good place to work and you will be temporary and then you will leave.
