• Worst place ever to work, unappreciated, untrained, different standards and expectations depending on your workskill level.Some have all responsibilities while others have none. Management does not give feedback to workers. Communication is disfunctional between upper management and employees. Management does not care about employees well being or engagement. Extremely high turnover rate of employees. Constant rotating door and new faces all the time (your just a number!)Rate of pay fluctuates depending how well you are liked. Department Managers make less than clerks and responsible for multiple departments.

• I took a job at Zehrs Hartsland in Guelph a few years back so I can only speak to the mgmt in 2014.I could not believe the relationship between the workers and store management and the dysfunctional relationship between the two. It was one of hatred and contempt and one I had never experienced in many previous Jobs.
  The Store Managers method of managing is one of bullying and intimidation and since a good deal of the employees are young and easily intimidated, it works well for him. His assistants are as big a joke and are basically overpaid stockboys.
  The collective bargaining agreement is totally disregarded and store manager runs his fiefdom like a Dicktator and probably gets bonuses for the amt of grievences he recieves. Head office cares not one bit. Management style is right out of the 50's and the reason unions are needed.
  The Store manager will ask for volunteers to work on stat holidays and then berate them for not getting as much work done as he wants. These (paid)volunteers may be cashiers or work in the deli or bakery or meat dept. and aren't as fast at stocking shelves as those who's job it may be. I know a few of these worked thinking they were helping out, almost a teamwork kind of feeling, but never again.
  Big, big problem of double standards. If you are one of the store managers darlings, you can basically break the rules as you wish with no worries of punishment. If you are not, look out for the repercussions, they will be many and never ending.
  
  If you are desperate( and I mean desperate) for work, come to Zehrs Hartsland, they are always hiring because of turn over but be ready to be verbally bullied, intimidated and under appreciated.
  
  Worst place I have ever had the displeasure of working at.

• I started working in full time 1972 and have never seen any job/workplace as vicious and spiteful in that 40+ years. Management preys on weaker employees, intimidates people and bullies those who stand up for themselves. Employees who do not commit any breaches of policy or break any rules are lied about and have stories of wrong doing fabricated by store managers. Humiliation is another favourite tool of store managers. I was accused of too many trips to the washroom by my boss, the store managers daughter, and disciplined at the order of her mother. At no time was any quantitative information offered as to number of bathroom breaks allowed or how many I took. This took 1 year to be removed from my work record. At 50+ years of age I need to go more often than my 20 something year old boss felt I should. Nobody ever asked if I had any health issues related to this alleged problem. I think the facts of this situation show I was punished simply as an attempt to humiliate me. Another favourite practice is to change peoples hours after schedules are posted and official by the CBA rules. The unsuspecting employee is then fired for no show/no call. Computer programs and records designed to prevent this are then over ridden and records obliterated so that if the person has not made a photocopy of the original schedule, they are screwed. Photo copying schedules is forbidden because of security reasons of the others on that schedule.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• The Caledonia Zehrs is the most stressful, corrupt, and discriminative workplace I have ever had the displeasure of working in. The store managers have no respect for their employees and consistently talk down to them. Favouritism in this store is almost as common as the flies. A notion prevails among employees that they go unrecognised in spite of the hard work they put in. Managers give certain employees preferential treatment and let said employees leave their departments as they please while the remainder of us pick up the slack. Any complaints or problems we bring to the store managers go unaddressed and unresolved. • I've worked at 2 zehrs stores: at the first one, my manager was an abusive prick. He would often give me reprimands for shit that I didn't do, or that he claimed I did. At the second one, they never let me book any time off, not for a 900$ prepaid camping trip, not for my sons first birthday, just nothing, even though I booked a month ahead, then brought it up to the manager 2 weeks, 1 week, 2 days before and also an hour before they put up the schedule. The management is horrible, and they don't listen to anything we say. Also, how does it make sense to hire more people when every part-timer is in need of more hours? I used to have 28 hours a week, they cut me down to 10. I cant support my family with that! The managers also revise the schedule in the middle of the week, and then they get angry if you don't show up on a shift that wasn't on the original schedule. Health and safety standards? Managers don't give a damn. Not hard to believe that the Zehrs I currently work at is rated one of the worst 5 in Ontario. • Zehrs is getting worse.some of the department managers don't care about what days you need off for important things like school or family things. They never say thank you for all the work you put in.there's so much gossip there its horrible. • Managers dont care about you but just on what you get done...most people who work for the company dont know all their rights and the managers use that against you...its a real negative environment to work in...co workers and management constantly complain to one another about the work and coworkers and everything negative....13 of my questions i would have rated zero stars but unfortunately they do not allow you to put zero stars....terrible place to work...stay away!   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• Run don't walk away from Zehrs. Management treats you terrible. I take pride in my work even though it is menial. Don't expect any kudos for a job well done.

• Worked for Zehrs for 30+ years. Used to be a great place work. Has gone downhill ever since LCL took over. Every aspect of the operation is brutal beyond words. Liars, thieves, bullies, unintelligent, useless, backstabbers etc... is what most of the management team are about. They prey on the weak like the cowards they are and run like rats when confronted by anyone who stands up for themselves. I've had some shots taken at me over the years but didn't take their crap and it all went away very quickly. Gutless pukes. Rot in Hell. Take your buyout and leave . I'm gone. I feel sorry for the good people left behind who need to stay for their own reasons as they will suffer from all the stupidity and BS day after day. Think of all the things I'm giving up after 30+ years : six weeks holidays, benefits, pension contributions, flexible schedule, clean envoirnment, not bad pay, etc... not even close to being worth the day to day crap that is Zehrs Markets and isn't that a sad statement but a true reality. Take your money and run. Leave the sinking ship. Never darken any of the LCL stores doors again hurting them where it counts. • Not sure what other people are going through but my store is not too bad. I have heard that some are not good and have bad management.

• Zehrs Human Resources will try and starve the employee out when you go to fight all these unjust so called 'preformance issue' reprimands The management have been told to check off every disciplinary as performance issues so that each reprimand will snowball the penalty of the next one.
  The company will drag to process out so that you can't meet your morgage payments, pay your bills, feed your family. At that time you are so desperate that you will take any deal.
  Zehrs has gone downhill, while at the same time they come out with 'feel good' policy's such as repecting the workforce and on and on. It means nothing.
  I would not recommend this retailer nor would I recommend retail in this day and age.
  Walmart has helped lower the bar to near the ground in Canada and others have followed their pathetic example.   read complete rating Hide complete rating

• As a highschool student, I desperately needed a job to start saving up for University. I had heard that Zehrs was a decent place to work and a lot of my friends wanted to get in there. So I applied and was hired. Worst decision of my life. As a cashier you are treated like absolute dirt by customers. Managers do little to stick up for you. While some of my front end managers are understandable the assistant and store manager have such large power complexes, employees are scared to be in their presences. Zehrs is not understanding of school and work always comes before family. I have shown up to work multiple times sick out of my mind because I was too afraid to call in sick. Other employees have told me stories about calling in and being threatened about losing their job and hours for doing so. I'm going on my second year working for this company and my only reason for staying are the friends I've made here. I would never recommend anybody to work here.
