CN is the only place I have worked where I have been threatend with disapline for booking off with the flu and refusing to get a doctors note and then having managers phone my house at 12am and 6am seeing if I was going to book back on to work. It was the first time I booked off sick in 2.5 years and I was only booked off 36 hours total, talk about concern for your employees. The entire company is obsessed with their bonuses and will run the entire operation ineffectively to get their bonuses even if it means running things inproperly or unsafely. I have been told to work tracks (buckle up hoses on cars) without proper protection, a practice that has cost previous employees their legs and I was threatened with disapline when I refused to do the work unsafely because "the train has to get out of the yard and we don't want to cut your engine off and tie it onto the track we want you to work because it will take forever to pump up the air in the train line again". However if you dont have your velcro safety vest done up you will also go in for disapline because failing you on their safety audits affects their bonuses but real safety isn't a real concern to them.If it is such a great place to work and management is so great then why are they hiring guys right off the street for junior management instead of promoting from within the company when employees are offered management positions every couple of months and no one applies or if they do they drop out with in a year. In management you are on call 24/7 and if you don't answer your phone you will hear about it. They promise you things like 4 on 4 off with 12 hour days but go talk to any trainmaster and they are usually working 6-7 days a week. The longest that I have heard about is a trainmaster going 45 days without a day off he looked absolutely exhausted and haggard. Even with the bonuses he said he was making around $7-$8 a hour. Another trainmaster I know was getting into his car with his family for holidays and the phone rang, "Your holidays are cancelled and we need you at work tonight".That has been my personal experience at CN and maybe it is better elsewhere but I have my doubts.
